Some People Make Their Cats Vegetarian…

…Mine  tells me he wants to be a vegetarian. Too bad he’s an obligate carnivore.

We have compromised to pescetarian so that he gets his nutritional needs like natural (non synthetic) taurine and arachidonic acid but doesn’t have to eat his brothers and sisters’ kinds. He likes to supplement his fish in jelly with a range of plant foods which he either steals from my chopping board, cupboards, fridge or most worryingly, the neighbours houses.

Sorry neighbours.

He has brought sandwiches home twice! I’d rather that than a helpless bird, but I’m not sure my hungry at lunchtime neighbours would agree…

Here is some of Tiger Pants’ (Rios’) favourites caught in the act…

Even his sister has learnt a few tricks and brought home her own galia melon…

  1. oh my lord that little furface! I love it.

  2. thesnowwoman says:

Love the picture with mud, such a look of “busted”, so funny.

  3. cute! Mine l.o.v.e.s. chickpeas

  4. This is adorable! I’ve never been in the company of a veggie-eating cat. Mine only reacts wildly to meat and has stolen entire pieces of bacon from my plate like a little scavenger.

  5. naturalfuel says:

haha hilarious!! My cat definitely loves his meat but he’s always sniffing around my dinners too. Caught him drinking my mint tea once! Love quirky furballs! 🙂

  6. IlonaH says:

So cute! Were they already interested in vegetables? If not, how did you make them like it?
Love reading your blog, so much love for animals!

    • Poppy says:

      Aww thank you!
It’s innate in him, one day he started eating mashed swede straight out the pot and obviously got a taste for it! He LOVES vegetables, he’d happily eat only them, the fish is just kind of maintenance! His sister is less interested, she loves her melon and coconut but that’s about it!
They came from a farm where they lived a stray life on scraps and scavenged food so it may stem from there…

Too funny! His face, with mud on it makes a priceless photo! My two have never shown such a taste for veggies, but one seems to have a (dangerous, obviously) obsession with chocolate and all things mint (gum, dental floss, etc.).

  8. HeartBound says:

That face! 🙂 I love it when animals enjoy fruits and veg. My cat quite likes cooked leafy greens.

  9. Oh my gosh…I laughed through this whole post. Love it!! 🙂

  10. Hannah says:

How funny! My cat won’t touch anything green. My dog, however, has a pension for carrots, potatoes, and apple 🙂

  11. Haha! That’s fantastic! The image of your cat dragging a sandwich home as a prize makes my day! I wish my cat even liked seafood, I would much prefer to feed that to her. Thanks for sharing those adorable pictures!

  12. Ah! So cute! You’ve captured some great photos, Poppy. Many of our cats over the years have gone bonkers for cantaloupe – it was like catnip to them.

    • Poppy says:

There’s many more moments I haven’t been able to capture, like the potato boiling in a pan scooped straight out the pot. Or the time I found him fast asleep on the stove with his head resting against a hot pan. Silly kitty!!
I wonder what it is about melon that they love so much. The night Pooky brought her melon half in which was twice the size of her head, she stayed with it all night holding it before eating every last scrap, skin and all!

I hope you are keeping well Annie, lovely to hear from you!

  13. Katherine says:

Animals are so funny. My beagle loves veggies. She chews on kale stalks like they were bones.

  14. KerryCan says:

Your pictures are such fun! One of my cats LOVES fresh spinach–she will dance on her back feet for it. She’ll settle for romaine, if there’s no spinach in the house . . . .

    • Poppy says:

Aww cute! Funnily enough raw leaves is the one thing he’s not into. It’s a wonder any creature (let alone a cat) who can eat an entire, raw potato can be fussy!

  15. ohlidia says:

Awww… too cute! My kitty Shadow would love him. She too loves to eat fruits and veggies! 🙂

  16. Debbie Spivey says:

Love it! Mine has eaten carrots and love lettuce.

  17. Aww, your kitty is SO cute!

  18. Brilliant! Our cat steals veg too: out of the vegbox, off our plates, out of the compost bin and from under the rabbits nose. She likes raw but cooked pumpkin is her absolute favourite. She has no control and eats it until she’s sick…

  19. Oh my gosh, this is so precious!! I love his mud face!

  20. kimbieblue says:

My old housemates warned me when I first moved in not to leave tomatoes out because their cat ate them haha!

  21. How sweet! I love these cute photos!

  22. theedgeofveg says:

Aw he’s adorable! It’s so hard to be mad when they look that cute. (:

  23. So cute! Same thing here, one of ours, Captain Hook prefers veggies to any meat, particularly broccoli stalks (the STALKS!) and green beans. He ate a chick pea a few days ago. Another cat, Charlie, likes ANY human food, and attacked half an avocado I had on the counter for 20 seconds. I have to watch her like she’s my child. At least they make life interesting!

  24. genkikitty says:

So cute! Ours is the same – she loves edamame, raw green beans, fennel and etc. It’s so adorable to listen and watch them eat raw veggies. (I’ve heard though that grapes are bad for pets – it ruins their kidneys.)

    • Poppy says:

Wow, fennel! Yes, I love listening to them crunching away! Thanks for highlighting the potential dangers of grapes, yes they can be toxic, but mainly to dogs. I don’t feed him grapes, he stole this one!! 😀
